Outdated wiring is often overlooked, because in many instances its out of sight, and out of mind. Even homes with an updated electrical service and devices can be harboring outdated wires. A telltale sign that you may have outdated and potentially dangerous wires in your home is a 2 prong outlet, or any wires wrapped in a cloth like, or silvery jacket.
In some instances older homes built with 2 prong ungrounded outlets are "updated" to use 3 prong grounded outlets. Often the wiring is reused and is lacking a ground connection back to the main service panel. A ground connection is the crucial safety function of the third prong, it is to provide a path for electricity to flow safely to the ground if a fault occurs within an appliance or device. With no actual ground wire connected to the three-prong outlet on a two-wire system, there is no safe path for stray current. If a fault causes the metal case of a device to become energized, a person touching it could receive a dangerous shock.
